Raku Pottery: Horsehair Reduction Technique
Friday August 15 6-10PM @ NLMCC
$65 or both Raku workshops for $120
Raku is a fast-firing process that produces metallic and iridescent colours. This method of firing
is about discovering the energy of the fire and the beauty in the unexpected. Horsehair Reduction is a post firing process in experimenting with organic materials to achieve
interesting smoked patterns and design. Strains of horsehair or other organic materials such as
feather, dry leaves and flowers are placed onto a heated bisque fired pot to create interesting
and unique markings.
Saggar is a container made of refractory or heat-resistant material to safeguard a clay pot from
the direct flames. Adding organic material and ceramic colourants in and around the clay pot will
produce carbonized markings, marbled surface effects, and warm earth tone colors resembling
sawdust or pit fired pots.
Astrid Kruse
Astrid is a ceramic artist from Yellowknife, NT. She observes her environment and pushes that
experience into clay. The vessels she makes are about process and form. These forms are
impacted by the elements as the season’s change. Nature’s process is to move the water that
carves the rock, and the wind that sculpts the snow. The patterns, chaos and motion of nature
are her inspiration. This is expressed through the textures, colour and energy that she uses in
her clay work
