TRADITIONAL MOOSEHIDE TANNING COURSE

Smith’s Landing First Nation along with the Northern Life Museum & Cultural Centre are hosting a 10-day Moose Hide Tanning course. The
instructors will guide you step-by-step through the processes of traditional tanning including skills and cultural practices that go back thousands of
years. Participants will learn to prepare, flesh, scrape and smoke the hides. They will also teach how to make tanning tools out of moose bone.
Tanning hides is labour intensive.  Finished product will go to SLFN to be used for a moccasin making course.

Traditional Moose Hide Tanning is something that is learned by doing which is why
having instructors Lena, Elizabeth and Lawrence demonstrate guide students is key to passing along the knowledge. These elders willingly enjoy
sharing their knowledge and hope to pass down this skill to generations so that this cultural technique continues to stay alive.

Community Members are welcome to stop by and view the process during the week!
