In this workshop participants will explore Kate’s signature building technique using three simple materials; wire, cloth and polymer clay. Students
will learn a method of creating movement and learn to work with polymer clay while creating heads hands and feet for a character. The workshop will
be as much about learning what to do as learning what can be added or felt about what you do.
Artist Biography – Kate Church:
Combining the line and form of sculpture with the playful animation of puppetry has been Kate’s primary work for more than twenty years. She
stumbled into it while working with the renowned Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, an international children’s puppetry company. Lunchtime was
often spent watching her colleagues make things like napkins and brown paper bags animate. A desire to do more than clothe puppets and
puppeteers led Kate to create her first little doll. Enchanted from the first moment, that little figure sits in her studio charming her to this day.
Kate is proud to have created figures for Cirque du Soleil which were sold in their shops and at their shows around the world.
She now creates a much small number of pieces, savoring a combination of practice and challenge, engaging the tender
emotional place that she creates from with a depth of experience and a lightness of touch, and looking to find something new and hopefully, for her audience, something delightful.
